Assassins storm church kill high chief
. It was a brutal Sunday for an Ijebu chief as he was
allegedly shot dead during a church service in Ijebu Igbo,
headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area of
Ogun State, South West Nigeria by suspected assassins.
The deceased, Chief Tola Okuneye was until his death the
chairman of Ijebu North Local Government Police
Community Relations Committee.
The 70-year-old Chief was a one time famous furniture
maker popular within Ijebu Igbo and its environs.
Witnesses told sunnewsonline.com that Okeneye was
allegedly shot dead by ten armed men suspected to be
assassins during an early morning church service at St.
John African Church, Oke Sopen area of the ancient town.
The late chief fondly called ”Ajagajigi” was said to be a
close maternal family member of a chieftain of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in the town.
Sunnewsonline.com reliably gathered that the gun men
stormed the church in two vehicles at about 11.00a.m; while
the service was going on and went straight to where the
late chief was sitting in company of others and shot him on
the head.
A witness further stated that Okuneye’s assailants later
fled from the scene of the incident causing pandemonium
among the congregation who ran for their dear lives.
A member of the congregation who spoke with
sunnewsonline.com on condition of anonymity said: “The
service was on when we noticed that some boys numbering
about ten armed to teeth entered the church and headed
straight to where Chief Okuneye was sitting and shot him
on the head. It was the time our preacher was about to
mount the pulpit. It was about 11.00a.m.
